Heat pump installation for Downeast winters
Cold-climate ductless and ducted heat pumps that heat through January, cool in August and can cut what you spend on oil or propane.
Sized for your house, not a brochure
A heat pump that is too small runs flat out on the coldest nights. One that is too big short-cycles and wastes money. We measure your rooms, look at insulation and windows, and size the system to your home's heating load before we recommend equipment.
We install single-zone and whole-home systems, place indoor heads where the heat reaches the rooms you use, and set controls so the system runs efficiently instead of fighting your old boiler.
What we install
- Ductless mini-splits, one room or several
- Ducted heat pumps for homes with existing ductwork
- Cold-climate models rated for sub-zero heating
- Heat pump plus REME HALO purification on ducted systems
- Controls and thermostat setup with your existing heat

Project spotlight: heating a glamping dome
Ductless heat pumps fit where nothing else will. To keep this fabric geodesic dome comfortable, we mounted a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heating outdoor unit on the shed next door, trenched the line set across to the deck, and set a low floor-mounted console inside.
Video description: a walk across the deck into a fabric geodesic dome furnished as a guest suite, a look up at the skylight, the trench carrying the line set from the shed, and the room interior, ending on the On Target Air logo. The numbered photos below show the same install.
Rental cabins, studios, additions and outbuildings work the same way: one outdoor unit, a small line set and a quiet indoor head.

Questions
Heat pump questions
Will a heat pump keep my house warm in a Maine winter?
Cold-climate heat pumps are built to keep heating well below zero. The key is sizing the system for your home's heating load at local winter temperatures, which we calculate during the home visit.
Can I keep my oil or propane system as backup?
Many homeowners do. Note that Efficiency Maine's whole-home rebate expects the heat pump to be your main heat through the season and does not cover dual-fuel combination systems. We will explain the trade-offs for your house.
Ductless or ducted?
Ductless mini-splits suit homes without ductwork and let you heat room by room. Ducted heat pumps suit homes with existing ducts and can carry REME HALO purification to every room.
How do I get the Efficiency Maine rebate?
Rebates must be installed by an Efficiency Maine Residential Registered Vendor and the equipment must be on the rebate-eligible list. Ask us during your quote and we will check your eligibility.
